Dr. Ben Boucher
Integrative management of vector-transmitted illness
By: Philip Rouchotas, MSc, ND
Issue: November 2011
Dr Ben Boucher, MD, was born and raised in the Havre Boucher region (Antigonish County) of Nova Scotia. He is quick to highlight his Aboriginal and Acadian ancestry, which he traces back to the 1700’s, as a driving force in his lifelong self- image of individualism- an individual who finds himself having spent a lifetime at odds with the status quo. Physicians who fully embrace the tenants of individualized, holistic medicine seem to share this sense of “being different”, and Dr Boucher is no exception.
Dr Akbar Khan, MD
Medicor Cancer Centres
By: Philip Rouchotas, MSc, ND
Issue: August/September 2011
As IHP continues to showcase integrated medical doctors as cover features, several trends emerge with regards to the manner in which an MD generates an interest in implementation of integrative therapies. Sometimes the MD entered their medical training with an already existing passion for natural therapeutics. Often the decision stems from patient inquiry leading to literature- based research of the field. Dr Akbar Khan, MD, represents a novel and exciting avenue through which, in this case, a conventionally- trained family physician has come to embrace a broad array of integrative techniques; he witnessed first hand the immense magnitude of safety and efficacy of the practice.

Markham Integrative Medicine

Issue: June/July 2011
The pace with which awareness and interest in Integrative Medicine grows is staggering. Interacting with healthcare providers and patients over the course of a decade has clearly revealed this. The likelihood of a patient receiving words of caution from their family physician when informed of their decision to visit an integrative practitioner a decade ago was guaranteed to be greater than 90%. Seemingly with every passing year this number decreases. As a naturopathic doctor I have personally witnessed an encouraging increase in family physicians taking the time to contact me seeking information on the strategy adopted for a patient under both of our care.

Excellence in Integrative Psychiatry
By: Philip Rouchotas, MSc, ND
Issue: April/May 2011
I arrived in medical school thinking brown rice and yoga was a cure for everything” states Dr James Greenblatt, a Psychiatrist practicing in the Waltham, Massachusetts (greater Boston) area. He received his license to practice adult psychiatry from George Washington University in 1990, and followed this with training in child psychiatry from John Hopkins. His interest in integrative medicine began early in his career, as he describes a seminar on “the evolution of the biomedical model” in 1988 as instrumental in the manner in which he approaches the practice of psychiatry today. Dr. Greenblatt’s commitment to integrative medicine for mental health is seen in his private outpatient practice (named Comprehensive Psychiatric Resources), and in his many lectures and seminars given throughout the US and Canada.

Dr Gordon Ko, MD, has been practicing as a physiatrist (principally managing patients with chronic pain) since the late 1980’s. He is an accomplished author with several contributions to peer reviewed clinician journals, a practitioner and teacher at Sunnybrooke Hospital, and an active member of his community in terms of educating through public seminars, television appearances, and involvement in activities of his local church. He is a devoted father of four children, managing to juggle practice/media/teaching responsibilities with the demands of four full extracurricular schedules. From very early on in his training, Dr Ko developed a keen interest in the role of integrative medical strategies. He has since devoted much of himself to delivery of integrative medicine to his patients, as well as attempt to showcase the power of integrative techniques to his colleagues.
